  • ACL Tear Surgery

ACL tear surgery can be divided into three types depending on whether the ACL is torn from its middle, at either end with most of it (90%) intact in its length, with or without a bone piece or when one bundle of the ACL has come off from either end and the other completely torn in its middle.

When torn in its middle a biological ACL reconstruction is done, preserving as much of the existing ACL as possible and making a new (reconstructing) ACL using spare tendons from the body. This helps in giving blood supply and stability to the graft.

When one end is torn, with a bone piece, the end is fixed back by stitching either end arthroscopically and tied over a button on the bone. If it has come out without a bony fragment, apart from stitching both ends arthroscopically and fixing over a button a tape made of strong suture material is passed through the middle of the ligament and fixed at either end with a button. This acts as an internal support for the existing ACL and helps it stabilise as well as heal in the right direction.

When one bundle has come off and the other completely torn, one bundle is reconstructed and the one come off fixed back to where its come out from and tied over a button. This is not only biological but provides support to the graft that has been reconstructed.
